Introduction to FMEA Training
Students will be able to:
- Describe what an FMEA is and why an FMEA is used.
- Explain the differences between a Design-FMEA and a Process-FMEA.
- Explain how the systematic FMEA approach getting us to dig into the details of the product or process under study to identify potential risks.
- Define how an FMEA helps identify risks, prioritizes the risks relative to one another, and focuses efforts on an action plan to reduce the risks.
- Apply criteria to assemble and effective FMEA team.
Intended Audience: Managers and supervisors who oversee teams responsible for conducting FMEAs.
Time To Complete: 3 hours (0.3 CEUs)
Recommended Prerequisites: None.
Introduction to FMEAs Training
This online training introduces learners to the basic concepts of conducting a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. It is ideal for managers and supervisors who oversee teams responsible for conducting FMEAs, but who will not be actually serving on the FMEA team.
Process-FMEA Training
Students will be able to:
- Explain the purpose of conducting a FMEA.
- Explain the methodology of the FMEA process.
- Assemble a FMEA team.
- Define the scope of a PFMEA.
- Work through each step of conducting a PFMEA.
- Use the FMEA Worksheet to document the results of the study.
- Customize the Severity, Occurrence and Detection Ranking Scales.
- Use the results of a PFMEA to trigger continuous improvement.
Intended Audience: Manufacturing and process engineers, quality managers, manufacturing operators.
Time To Complete: 5 hours (0.5 CEUs)
Recommended Prerequisites: An understanding of data analysis tools and techniques such as Quality Improvement Fundamentals or the equivalent.
Essential PFMEA Training
Complete step-by-step training on Process FMEAs that prepares team members to actively participate on PFMEA project teams.
Design-FMEA Training
Students will be able to:
- Explain the purpose of conducting a FMEA.
- Explain the methodology of the FMEA process.
- Assemble a FMEA team.
- Define the scope of a DFMEA.
- Work through each step of conducting a DFMEA.
- Use the FMEA Worksheet to document the results of the study.
- Customize the Severity, Occurrence and Detection Ranking Scales.
- Use the results of a DFMEA to trigger continuous improvement.
Intended Audience: Design engineers, product managers, marketing and customer service personnel.
Time To Complete: 5 hours (0.5 CEUs)
Recommended Prerequisites: An understanding of data analysis tools and techniques such as Quality Improvement Fundamentals or the equivalent.
Essential DFMEA Training
Complete step-by-step training on Design FMEAs that prepares team members to actively participate on DFMEA project teams.
Quality Improvement Fundamentals Online Training
This targeted training makes a strong and compelling case for using data to analyze problems and make decisions. Learners are introduced to 8 Quality Improvement Tools that will enable them to easily collect data, uncover clues and fix problems either on their own or in teams. This course doesn’t support any particular methodology, but rather focuses on the techniques that are at the heart of any problem-solving process.
Why are The Basic Quality Improvement Tools so Powerful?
All processes generate data and that data can help us better understand our processes so that we can make informed decisions on how to improve or “fix” them. If we use data display tools, those tools help present the data in the form of a “picture” that provides valuable clues about what is happening with the process and its outcomes. Quality Improvement Fundamentals focuses on gathering data and using that data with eight powerful data display tools. The eight tools all use display techniques that literally turn the data into pictures.
This Training Enables Learners To…
- Collect meaningful data.
- Analyze data to uncover clues and learn more about a process and its problems.
- Use data to get to the root cause of an issue.
Intended Audience: Anyone responsible for making improvements in their jobs or on teams.
Time To Complete: 2 hours (0.2 CEUs)
Recommended Prerequisites: Learners should have an interest in making improvements in their jobs.

What is Failure Mode and Effects Analysis?
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) techniques have been around for over 40 years. In recent years, use of FMEAs has gained popularity as a quality improvement tool. This interest is in large part due to the automotive industry and specifically its IAFT 16949 supplier requirements. Other major industries, including aerospace, medical products, and electronics are also using FMEA techniques as part of their improvement and risk assessment strategies. Unlike many quality improvement tools, FMEAs do not require complicated statistics. FMEA studies can yield significant savings for a company as well as reduce the potential liability of a process or product that does not perform as promised.
